Protein and Carbs

To eat less, eat more

Grabbing a 100-calorie snack pack of cookies or pretzels may seem virtuous, but it's more likely to make you hungrier than if you ate something more substantial, says Amy Goodson, RD, dietitian for Texas Health Ben Hogan Sports Medicine. "Eating small amounts of carbohydrates does nothing but spike your blood sugar and leave you wanting more carbs." Goodson recommends choosing a protein such as peanut butter or string cheese with an apple. "They are higher in calories per serving, but the protein and fat helps you get full faster and stay full longer—and you end up eating fewer calories overall," she says.

What are calories?

Calories refer to the amount of energy released by food, which is determined by the content of carbohydrates, protein and fat. You can either use that energy through physical activity or the body stores it in the form of fat for future use. The nutritional value of food has an effect on your overall health, but the key for maintaining a healthy weight is to watch the total number of calories consumed.

Learn Ways to relax

Stress is a natural part of life. And while beneficial in small doses, a large amount of stress can cause harm to a person’s mental and physical health. The detrimental effects of stress may include anxiety, chest pain, frequent headaches, rapid heartbeat, and weight gain or weight loss.

If you are a person who suffers from the detrimental effects of stress, whether frequently or infrequently, it is important to learn a few techniques to help you manage your stress levels and overall well being.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the practice of using naturally extracted aromatic essences, also known as essential oils, from plants to balance the body and promote mental and physical health.

There are several types of essential oils that are used to reduce tension and promote relaxation. Essential oils that may help relax your body and calm your mind include chamomile, marjoram, lavender, lemon, rose, sage, and ylang ylang.

Essential oils can be either applied directly to the skin or used in a diffuser. If applying to your skin, make sure the oils you select are meant for use on the body, and be sure to perform an allergy test before applying to a large area. To use a diffuser, place a few drops of the essential oil (I am a young living distributor) of your choice inside (love peace and calming) and allow the aroma to slowly permeate into the air.

Deep Breathing

Deep breathing, also known as controlled breathing, is beneficial when it comes to reducing stress levels. In addition to loosening rigid, tense muscles and promoting relaxation and sleep, deep breathing can also improve your body’s nitric oxide levels, which can in turn lower your heart rate and combat high blood pressure.

To reap the benefits of deep breath;  deep breathing sessions range from 20 to 30 minutes.

Gentle Stretching

Gentle stretching can make your skeletal muscles pliable and supple. Incorporating a stretching routine helps blood flow to the brain and skeletal muscles, and also increases your threshold to pain.

All parts of the body can benefit from gentle stretching. For example, rotator cuff may help strengthen the shoulder area while also improving your full range of motion and blood flow.

And relax:)

Avoid holiday rundown!

From our monthly newsletter!!!!

In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it's easy to get run down! Actually, I'm writing this as I recover from a terrible cold. Seems I needed to get on the ball with my immune system a little earlier! Luckily I attribute my speedy recovery to some of these great immune boosting foods! Trust me, it's not something that you can afford to be overlooking.
Most people let themselves get highly stressed out, don't get enough sleep at night, and aren't eating as they should – all things that will significantly hamper your immune system strength, especially this time of year.
Fortunately, you can change the picture around by making smarter food choices.
Let's look at a few of the great immune boosting foods that you should be eating daily:
1. Greek Yogurt
The first of the top foods that help you boost your immune system, is Greek yogurt. Greek yogurt contains natural bacteria that enhances immune system health and helps you fight off infection or other harmful bacteria trying to enter your body.
Greek yogurt also offers a number of other vitamins and minerals so it should never be overlooked from your diet plan.
2. Green Tea
Green tea is another great immune booster to take in regularly. It has powerful antioxidants that will help to keep your immune system strong and ward off invading bacteria.
Green tea also gives you the added benefit of boosting your metabolic rate, so it can assist with the process of fat loss.
3. Mushrooms
Mushrooms are also excellent as immune boosters, due to the selenium and antioxidant content they contain. Mushrooms are very rich in the B-vitamins riboflavin and niacin, both of which play pivotal roles in immune health.
Furthermore, mushrooms provide antiviral and antibacterial benefits, which help fend off invading germs from entering your system.
4. Watermelon
Watermelon is one fruit that you definitely don't want to miss out on! Watermelon contains a very powerful antioxidant-glutathione--which can strengthen the immune system and help to fight off infection.
This fruit is also very high in vitamin C content, which is another vitamin that will keep your immune system strong and help you to feel your best.
5. Grapefruit
Finally, another fruit to be eating regularly in order to strengthen your immune system is grapefruit.
Grapefruit contains a high dose of vitamin C as well - ranking as one of the fruits richest in this nutrient. In addition, grapefruit is also very high in flavonoids, which help improve immune system activation.
Other citrus fruits will provide these benefits as well, so consider including oranges or tangerines into your diet as well.
Did you know?
Ashwaganda in Energé improves immune function! This incredible herb is also able to increase energy and endurance, while quieting the mind and reducing anxiety at the same time. It can elevate your mood, improve your quality of sleep and it is a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory!

Healthy heart..... 5 items

Our heart is the most important muscle in our body, without it we can’t survive.  Adding certain foods to your diet can help you keep a happy, healthy heart.  Here are 5 items you can add to your diet!
1. Nuts. They contain heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, especially almonds, walnuts and cashews. Eat a moderate portion every day.
2. Whole soy protein. If you substitute whole soy protein, such as edamame or tofu, for animal protein each day, you can lower levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that when present in high levels has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease.
3. Fresh garlic. This medicinal herb has been shown to help lower cholesterol levels. Use one or two raw or lightly cooked cloves a day.
4. Green tea. It provides EGCG, a polyphenol than may help to moderate inflammation and lower cholesterol. Substitute a cup of heart-healthy green tea for your morning coffee or afternoon soda.
5. Soluble fiber. It has a powerful cholesterol-lowering effect. Beans, legumes and whole grains are good sources to add to your diet – aim for 1-2 servings per day.

every day for six weeks. If oolong isn't your favorite, you'll be glad to know that green tea can also assist in weight loss.
In addition to all its detoxifying properties, drinking green tea can help speed up your body's metabolism!

In the EVE.....instead of reaching for the chips!!!

~~many people try to “tough it out”, but end up eating too much at dinner.  Rather than a small snack, try having a ‘second lunch’ – something a little more substantial like a protein shake, a cup of cottage cheese with some fruit, or a low calorie frozen meal.  Then, you can do your cutting back at dinner time.

Try any of our protein  available here:  www.kristine.automaticbody.com to help you in this snack time!!!

Staying Hydrated, Reading your Body.

Staying hydrated you maybe become dehydrated before you are actually thirsty, this is one reason that athletes learn to drink on a schedule; 2 cups of fluid every couple of hours.  15-20 oz. every 15 minutes to get started.  One way to monitor your hydration id to monitor the color of your urine and it should be pale yellow or clear. A darker urine color usually means concentrated an indication that you should increase your fluid intake.   Other liquids (such as Fuel) added to your intake each day will help, yet they do not replace the consumption of water itself!!! Stress could be making you eat more....  But why?

The stress hormone, Cortisol, is directly related to making the body retain fat. Constant fluctuation in your body’s hormone levels are not good for your overall health, and can cause you to gain weight.

This hormone essentially tells the cells in your body to hold onto fat as a self-preservation technique, especially around your abdomen. If you tend to stop eating when you’re stressed, this also causes your body’s hormones to fluctuate and push your body into “panic” mode. If your body thinks it’s not going to get food, it desperately holds onto fat. On the other hand, if you tend to overeat when you’re stressed, your body is used to the “feel good” hormones that are released as it processes the food you consume.

This also contributes to a cycle of eating in order to feel better, which ultimately leads to weight gain. The Skinne product from the Automatic Body program has Garcinia Cambogia in  it and it  helps lower stress and Cortisol levels.
